Inhaled steroids should be used daily to prevent asthma, and rescue inhalers should only be used when needed to treat acute asthma episodes, according to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology."The use of medical marijuana will help us make progress in fighting asthma," said Steve Seltzer, CEO of the Asthmatic Coalition. "Unfortunately this new study makes a number of very important points."The study included 15,446 patients with serious asthma attacks, and the researchers determined an average of 19.5% of them were using marijuana daily, compared with an 11% to 15% annual average of marijuana use among patients who had just started a smoking regimen. The study also found that patients with asthma who began using marijuana had significantly less airway infections, and were less likely to go on to develop asthma."Marijuana can be used to alleviate pain, to combat anxiety, and, hopefully, will also provide a safe route to help patients with asthma get off the medication," Seltzer said.Seltzer is a former U.S. Attorney in Montana, in charge of the Western Region of the Department of Justice's Criminal Division for more than two decades. This isn't the first research to suggest a link between marijuana and respiratory symptoms, and a 2014 study from researchers at Yale University in Chicago suggested that marijuana was as effective for relieving the symptoms of asthma as the more well-known anti-inflammatory medication aspirin. In the most recent study, published in the Journal of Asthma, scientists analyzed data from 16,711 people between 18 and 79 diagnosed with severe asthma during 2005 to 2009. The team found marijuana was not associated with an actual increase in the number of severe asthma attacks in the patients. The same research team analyzed data from 2,826 women with chronic bronchitis, chronic bronchitis caused by allergic rhinitis, between 2013 and 2015.Related Article:
